The Playlist: Spotify finally gets the Netflix TV show it deserves

A cheeky entrepreneur who wants music to be available cheaply on the Internet. Great established music labels ready to go to war with the newcomer. Silicon Valley ethics move fast, as do Swedish capitalists and content-hungry music fans: for all of this, and more, Spotify’s origin story has always seemed tailored for a juicy dramatic treat on a streamer like Netflix. And it arrives on October 13 with the launch of the 6-episode series The playlistthat’s exactly what we’re getting.

The trailer opens with an image of a luxury car, which speaks to the high stakes and gains in the battle for the money to come. And in the voiceovers, we hear characters including Edvin Endre (like Spotify CEO Daniel Ek) trace the now-known battle lines. Of course we already know how the story ends. But it will still be interesting to see it unfold anyway and see how we got here. Here, being a musical world dominated, among other things, by mix-and-match playlists and consumers who “rent” songs.

Heck, Spotify proved so adept at what it does, that even Apple was eventually forced to transition. The iPhone maker, which pioneered buying songs for 99 cents, launched Apple Music similar to Spotify in 2015.

The cast here also includes Swedish artist Janice Kamya Kavander, known to her fans as Janice. She is playing one of the main roles in The playlistthat of the singer “Bobbie T.”
